Kim: What made you decide to open this business?
Elle Monus: I answer this question a little differently than I used to. I originally got into fashion because I grew up as a plus size girl with very few options in clothing. I joined an early stage startup that sold clothing subscription boxes to plus size women. There, I realized “personalized” meant collecting data and making educated decisions based on a larger group of people. That works fairly well- but it doesn’t serve the person in a meaningful way.
Style is about presenting who you are to the world and you cant help someone do that if you don’t have a really solid idea of who someone really is.
How did you get started?
Elle Monus: I made the choice one day and just got started- that’s the hardest part- getting over your fear enough to make the first move. Everything I didn’t know, I asked someone about or Googled.
Why did you choose this profession?
EM: Being able to get others to see in themselves what beauty I see in them is what I work for. The moment when someone finally believes they deserve to be seen is always awe inspiring.
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you?
EM: I want to give back to the world in a meaningful way. I’ve always been very active in philanthropy and volunteering, but there’s just something so powerful about building your own dreams to be big enough to inspire others.
